Saturday 5/2/25 on DAZN PPV & Amazon Prime PPV:

David Benavidez vs Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez

11:00 PM ET/10:00 PM CT

Who’s Fighting:

David Benavidez (31-0) “The Mexican Monster” is poised to be the next face of boxing. He has the looks, the brains, he can talk the talk and more importantly is a damn good fighter who beats the living piss out of people. Benavidez has spent most of his career chasing the lucrative Canelo fight and to secure the passing of the torch from the Mexican fan base. However, recently Benavidez has given up on that and moved on to bigger goals. Literally bigger goals. He moved up to the 175 Light Heavyweight division and became a unified champion. Now he is fighting the 2nd best in the Cruiserweight division who has two of the four belts in his very first fight at this weight. In boxing we always talk about wanting our fighters to “dare to be great”. Few actually do. Benavidez is one of those fighters who only wants legacy fights.

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (48-1) was the first Mexican to win a belt at 168 lbs. He then went up and challenged Dmitry Bivol for his belt at 175 lbs and lost but lost to an all time great. Zurdo has since learned from his loss and found his home at the Cruiserweight division and is now the first Mexican to win titles at the division. He has literally made Mexican history. Zurdo has the boxing skills of a smaller man, can throw a ton of punches and has added some power as he put on weight. The only knock on him would be his feet are really really slow. Zurdo is a real threat and he has the advantage of being settled into the 199 lbs Cruiserweight division.

Why You Should Watch:

Cinco de Mayo weekend is THE weekend in boxing. We had Oscar de La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Canelo and now David Benavidez has declared himself the face of boxing. This is the heaviest title fight in boxing history between two Mexican fighters. The atmosphere in Vegas will be absolutely electric. Talking about the actual fight, we are going to see highly skilled fighters who are willing to beat the living hell out of each other. Benavidez is a special talent but this is his first fight at Cruiserweight. Will this be too much for him to handle as he faces the Unified Cruiserweight Champ in Zurdo Ramirez?

Armando Resendiz vs Jamie Munguia

10:00 PM ET/9:00 PM CT

Who’s Fighting:
Armando Resendiz (16-2) burst onto the global boxing scene when he got a huge win against former champion Caleb Plant. Resendiz came out and showed he belonged in the top 10 fighters in the 168 lb Super Middleweight division. He has flashed a mean streak that could make him into a fun player for years to come.

Jamie Munguia (45-2) was once seen as the heir apparent to Canelo Alvarez. That was until the two faced off and Canelo outclassed Munguia and at points physically held him and stopped him from getting knocked down. Munguia suffered the upset of the year in his next fight losing by one punch KO to Bruno Sorace. He went back to the lab after that and was able to avenge that loss… oh wait, by the lab I mean he was in the lab getting pumped full of steroids. You know how that happens. This is a crossroads fight for Munguia. If he loses he is never fighting in a meaningful fight again. This is do or die for his career.

Why You Should Watch:

This is another banger of a Cinco de Mayo fight. Two very popular Mexican warriors. Munguia has staked his name to being an all action fighter until he lost two fights in a row… then got popped for PEDs (whoopsie). This could be a bit of passing of the torch of who is the 2nd tier Mexican star in the Super Middleweight division. I expect these two to feed off the crowd and leave it all in the ring.

Oscar Duarte vs Angel Fierro

9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT

Who’s Fighting:
Oscar Duarte (30-2-1) elevated his profile in a loss against Ryan Garcia back in December 2023. Garcia has said that Duarte is the hardest punching fighter he has faced in his career. Since that loss Duarte has been on a sneaky good run and turning himself into a boogeyman of the 140 lb Junior Welterweight division.

Angel Fierro (24-4-2) has lost 3 of his last 4 fights but he is an action fighter. He embodies the Mexican warrior spirit. He is always looking to land the big punch. He is no doubt the underdog here but he will be a live dog for most of this fight.

Why You Should Watch:

We are all tuning into this fight to begin to bask in the atmosphere that comes along with a Cinco de Mayo fight weekend. The crowd will be loud and raucous. The fighters may enter with live Mariachi bands playing. They will be fighting to prime the energy within the crowd for the rest of the night. This is one of those fights where you watch not knowing anything about the fighters and leave not knowing their names but saying, “Damn, that was one hell of a fight”.
