Caleb Plant vs Armando Resendiz Weekend Recap

A weekend that was promised to have a fight that delivered entertainment, certainly did deliver but just not the fight or fights that we expected.

Bektemir Melikuziev vs Darius Fulghum 12 Round Thriller
What Happened:
Bektemir “Bek the Bully” Melikuziev (16-1) took on the young and up-and-coming Darius “DFG”Fulghum (14-1) in a WBA eliminator for the 168 lb, Super Middleweight division. You may not know what an eliminator is, it's basically a dibs for the winner of the fight to have their chance at the actual world title.
This was an intriguing 50/50 on paper coming in. Bek the Bully (honestly one of the best nicknames in boxing right now) is a cocky, flashy, showboating fighter. Only problem is he looks out of shape and is essentially the Eastern block’s knock off of Adidas… Abibas (I had a pair when I lived in Eastern Europe). Bek is incredibly unorthodox. Lunging in and out, throwing wild looping punches that would make you think he was a fan of Roy Jones Jr growing up. He has suffered a loss already and has not looked particularly good in his recent fights.
His opponent Darius Fulghum is young, tall, in great shape, fundamentally sound, and what some people consider as the future of the division. The issue that these young fighters run into sometimes is they haven’t fought enough tough veterans to learn the tricks of dirty boxing.
The fight was incredible and I would highly recommend you at least watch the highlights. Bek the Bully and DFG gave us an action fight for all 12 rounds. Bek got a point taken from him for holding after DFG had him hurt a few times. Like a true vet, The Bully found a groove late and started punishing DFG to the body late and secured a vital 12th round knockdown that was the key to the Bully winning on the scorecards.

Caleb Plant vs Father Time vs Armando Resendiz
What Happened:
I told you that Caleb Plant (23-3) was an old school boxer who wants all the smoke. That is still true but I forgot that smoking is bad for you. We thought Plant gutted out his last win against a wild nobody who hurt Plant early and forced him to make adjustments and fight a brawl. Well, maybe Plant, who is 32, is losing a step.
In the preview I didn’t lie to you. I told you I had no clue who Armando Resendiz (15-2) was but I suspected that he was a tough fighter based on Plant’s track record. Well during the 3rd round Resendiz gave us a glimpse that Plant may be past his prime and he never let up. Plant never gave up in this fight, but he also was never able to get anything going.
There was no subtly that this was supposed to be a fight to get out of the way so PBC could make a Pay Per View matchup of Plant vs Charlo… I say we do it anyway. There are no belts on the line. These guys are not getting younger. Boxing needs interesting fights.
Charlo Is Back… At Least Against Some Guy Who Goes By Cornflake
What Happened:
Jermall Charlo (34-0) had only fought a few times in the last 5 years. His career seemed completely derailed. He needed a fight against Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna (39-6-1), and yes he fought and looked like a guy who goes by Cornflake. This was a mismatch on paper and was even more of a mismatch in the ring. The positives are that Charlo 5 full rounds in before the TKO stoppage at the beginning of the 6th. Charlo looked cool, calm and composed the entire fight.
Charlo is still undefeated so if can keep building on this he could end up as a player in the 168 lb, Super Middleweight division. That’s why he should push for the Caleb Plant fight now. Strike while the iron is hot!
Yoenli Hernandez Has Massive Traps & He Is Terrifying
What Happened:
Yoenli Hernandez (8-0) burst onto the scene of the 160 lb, Middleweight division on Saturday. Yoenli is Cuban who now makes Providence, RI home. He looks like a bad man. He is not the classic Cuban boxer who puts on terribly boring fights. This man could be cast as the new Terminator. He looks like a destruction machine. That is what we saw as he put a 10 round beat down on the journeyman, gatekeeper to the upper echelon Kyrone Davis (19-4-1). Hernandez is definitely someone to keep an eye on in the near future.
