Wilder Wins Split Decision Slop Fest Over Chisora

Wilder Gets a Big Win

Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (45-4-1) gets his first decision win since 2015 on Saturday in London over Derek “War” Chisora (36-14-0). Both men are over 40 years old and it showed. Wilder and Chisora both looked completely exhausted after the first round. But like true middle aged men, they ignored everything in themselves and surrounding them that told them to hang it up and live a quiet, peaceful life.

Its the exact mental battle I fight 3 times a week when I torture myself going to crossfit classes as a 38 year old man. My body knows I shouldn’t be there. My friends are concerned I am going to seriously hurt myself. Yet, I convince myself every time that I need to prove something to myself.

Anyways, Wilder overall looked much better than Chisora. This isn’t a huge ringing endorsement. Chisora had only one move. Head down, throwing wild haymakers to the head and wild hooks to the body. Wilder showed flashes of a stiff jab. Chisora wasn’t a great stylistic matchup for him since we know that Wilder cannot box on the back foot. The Bronze Bomber did detonate a few right hands like the good old days which we hadn’t witnessed since the end of the Tyson Fury trilogy.

What is Next?

Wilder has put himself back into the discussion of mega fights. We don’t need to see Wilder fight some of the young, up-and-coming heavyweights (although I am now starting to convince myself that Wilder passing the torch to our last American hope in Richard Torrez Jr would be okay) instead we want to the old guard to close out their business with their contemporaries. That means Wilder should hold out for one of two fights.

First, boxing politics prevented us getting a Wilder vs Anthony Joshua fight at its pinnacle. Now they are both broken fighters looking to reinvent themselves and become relevant again.

Second, Wilder gets plucked to fight the best heavyweight of our generation. Wilder vs Oleksandr Usyk. Wilder takes this fight for the enormous bag of cash that comes with it. Usyk wants this fight so he can add Wilder’s former championship name to his resume. With a win over Usyk there would be no denying that Usyk cleared out the top names of his generation.

“War” Chisora has had an incredible career. He has fought the best of the best. He has become a British icon. But it is now for him to become “Retired” Chisora. It appeared he already had one foot out the door on Saturday. The man deserves to ride off into the sunset and enjoy the post-boxing life.
